Mar vows to campaign harder

MANILA, Philippines – With his ratings in surveys showing little sign of improvement, Liberal Party (LP) presidential candidate Manuel Roxas II vowed yesterday to campaign harder in the coming weeks and highlight more his qualifications and clear governance platform.

“As you can see, we don’t do dramas, we just work to let our people know what we can do and where we can bring our nation,” Roxas told reporters in Quezon City after meeting with local leaders and supporters led by Mayor Herbert Bautista.

“We want to see our country where each family can live in dignity, with decent livelihood, with enough money to buy food and fulfill their dream for their children – that’s where our campaign is focused,” he said.

Roxas’ ratings slipped from 21 percent to 18 percent in a survey conducted by the Social Weather Stations and the newspaper BusinessWorld from Feb. 5 to 7.

While admitting his survey ratings are erratic, he stressed “the most important survey is the one in May.”

LP officials are unfazed by Roxas’ poor showing, saying varying survey results only showed many voters are still undecided.

“We have several weeks to go to campaign. Our message of a better economy, a better future with jobs, and security for our people will resonate,” Quezon City Rep. Alfred Vargas Jr. said.

The ruling party hopes to get more support from voters in Metro Manila, particularly Quezon City, and is tapping Bautista to serve as its campaign manager for the whole metropolis. – With Aurea Calica
