Shear line brings heavy rain to Luzon, Visayas

MANILA, Philippines —State weather bureau PAGASA issued a weather advisory Sunday morning, February 8, warning of heavy rainfall across parts of Luzon and the Visayas due to a prevailing shear line.
In its 11 a.m. bulletin, PAGASA said 50 to 100 millimeters of rain are expected to affect Quezon, Oriental Mindoro, and the entire Bicol Region from Sunday until noon on Monday, February 9.
PAGASA said rainfall distribution is expected to shift as the shear line persists:
- Sunday to Monday noon (February 9): Heavy rains over Quezon, Oriental Mindoro, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Albay, and Sorsogon.
- Monday noon to Tuesday noon (February 10): Rains concentrated over Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, Northern Samar, and Eastern Samar.
- Tuesday noon to Wednesday noon (February 11): Continued rainfall threat over Albay, Sorsogon, Northern Samar, and Eastern Samar.
PAGASA warned that rainfall may be significantly higher in mountainous and elevated areas.
Flood and landslide risk. The agency said the risk of flooding and landslides may be heightened by antecedent rainfall, or ground saturation from rains over the past several days.
Media reports said flooding was already recorded in parts of Bicol, including Barangay Sabangan in Caramoran, Catanduanes, due to persistent heavy rains.
