In Ben Farrales’ Fashion

THE READING CLUB - THE READING CLUB By Girlie Rodis -
Tomorrow evening at the Makati Shangri-La, designer Ben Farrales will not only showcase 50 years of his life and art via showstopper evening gowns but also through "a little book" called In My Fashion. Written by the couture master’s friend and veteran lifestyle writer and editor Abe Florendo, it chronicles "everything about me except my love life," Mang Ben says.

Well, this is not exactly Farrales’ debut in the book business – he also published the coffeetable book Santo Niño: The Holy Child Devotion in the Philippines with Florendo as editor and principal writer. Books in general have been strong sources of inspiration for Mang Ben. This Sunday, the designer shares with us his favorite books that are as colorful and rich as his famous and glamorous creations.

Mang Ben says: My favorite writer is Og Mandino who has written over a dozen inspirational books on how to find peace of mind and happiness and live a successful life.

Even if the thoughts expressed are deep and full of wisdom, the words are simple and can be understood by everyone who sincerely desires to attain true riches. Some of the titles are A BETTER WAY TO LIVE, THE GREATEST SECRET IN THE WORLD, and THE GREATEST SUCCESS IN THE WORLD.

Mandino is a deeply spiritual writer whose works have helped many people. He has sold over 25 million copies and been translated into 18 languages. Although his stories are set in ancient times the lessons are as valid for our lives today. But let the master speak for himself:

If I feel depressed, I will sing.

If I feel sad, I will laugh.

If I feel overconfident I will remember my failures.

If I enjoy moments of greatness I will remember moments of shame.

If I attain great wealth I will remember one unfed mouth.

If I feel my skill is unmatched I will look at the stars.

Today I will be master of my emotions.

Book of the Week: The Reading Club recommends this week NEVER WRESTLE WITH A PIG by Mark H. McCormack. I’ve always enjoyed McCormack’s style of writing. He makes many seemingly complex business ideas simple. Available at all National Book Stores and Powerbooks.

Magazine of the Week: The Reading Club recommends REAL SIMPLE, available at your favorite magazine outlets and for subscriptions call Emerald Headway at 647-47-66 and 647-46-90.
