MANILA, Philippines — Zamboanga bet Rosegie Ramos has been doing her best to emulate what Tokyo Olympics gold medalist and cousin Hidilyn Diaz has accomplished.

The first significant step has been made with the 20-year-old Ramos qualifying for the Paris Olympics.

“She’s made it. We’re just waiting for the IWF computation and formal announcement. It’s formality,” said Samahang Weightlifting ng Pilipinas president Monico Puentevella.

Ramos put a lock on a ticket to Paris with a worthy performance yesterday in the final Olympic qualification meet – the IWF World Cup in Phuket, Thailand.

The two-time Asian junior champ and Southeast Asian Games bronze winner was nothing short of sensational as she topped Group B of women’s 49-kilogram division with a total lift of 190kg, 87 kg in snatch (silver) and 193kg (silver) in clean and jerk.

It was a magical effort that rewarded Ramos an Olympic slot, joining pole-vaulter EJ Obiena, gymnasts Carlos Yulo and Aleah Finnegan and boxers Eumir Marcial, Nesthy Petecio and Aira Villegas.

Interestingly, Diaz made her first of four Olympics as a 17-year-old in the 2008 Beijing Games, in a way, eerily similar to what Ramos is traversing.

For Puentevella, the sky is the limit for Ramos.

“To God be the glory. Barring no obstacles, she’s also on her way now to 2028 Los Angeles. She’s only 20. She still has a long way to go. Paris is just one step to realizing her dream,” said Puentevella.

“With proper support, she’s on her way. Thanks to Philippine Sports Commission, MVP (Manny V. Pangilinan), Ayalaland and SM Group of Companies. And to the parents, coaches, our doctors and SWP board, too,” he added.
