MANILA, Philippines — Four months after hosting the 30th Southeast Asian Games, the refurbished Rizal Memorial Sports Complex and two other venues will be utilized in the  country’s battle against the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.

The RMSC, which was renovated to meet international standards during the 11-nation SEA Games last December, has been designated as among the new quarantine sites amid the soaring cases of COVID-19 in the country.

The World Trade Center and the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC), which also served as SEAG venues, were likewise tapped as isolation centers.

According to Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles, the Department of Public Works and Highways has been directed to “complete all the works necessary” to convert the RMSC, as well as the PICC and WTC into “fully-functioning quarantine facilities.”

Authorities inspected the Philippine Sports Commission-controlled RMSC yesterday to start the process of conversion.

PSC chairman Butch Ramirez earlier said they offered the sports sites as temporary medical facilities to “help decongest the hospitals.”
