More imports make PBA debut today
MANILA, Philippines - Four more imports get to strut their wares today, each looking to dominate as Meralco battles Blackwater while GlobalPort faces Rain or Shine in the PBA Governor’s Cup at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
The Bolts and the Elite collide at 4:15 p.m. while the Batang Pier and Elasto Painters square off at 7 p.m., all aiming for a big start and an early share of the lead with the NLEX Road Warriors and the Phoenix Fuel Masters.
Focus will be on the import matchups with Meralco’s Allen Durham going up against Blackwater’s Trevis Simpson and Rain or Shine’s James Weatherspoon testing GlobalPort’s Jabril Trawick’s mettle.
Durham will be in his fourth tour of duty with the Norman Black-mentored Bolts while Simpson is a former UNC Greensboro standout who is coming off stints in Greece and France.
Weatherspoon, on the other hand, is a Toledo/Ohio alumnus who campaigned in Finland and Norway while Trawick is an ex-Georgetown Hoyas standout who played in Greece and France and was member of the Sioux Falls Skyforce that topped the 2016 G-League, formerly the NBA D-League.
Phoenix’s Eduard Phelps upstaged KIA’s Markeith Cummings, firing 33 points in 35 minutes to lead the Fuel Masters to a 118-105 romp over the Picanto in the league’s season-ending conference’s opening last Wednesday.
Aaron Fuller also turned in an impressive effort of 30 points and 20 rebounds as he powered the Warriors to a 112-104 victory over LaDontae Henton and the Alaska Aces.
