Amazona cops two titles anew

MANILA, Philippines - Davao Oriental’s Jeleardo Amazona captured another two titles in the second leg of HEAD 2013 Junior Satellite Circuit national age-group tennis tournament recently at the General Santos City Tennis Club in in General Santos.

Amazona engaged Abdulqoahar Allian of Zamboanga City in a neck-to-neck battle before cruising to a hard-earned 6-4, 7-6 (4) win to take home the boys’ singles 18-under title.

“Playing against Allian is very tough, but I got good breaks in the second set so I took the opportunity,” said Amazona, who also clinched the 18- and 16-under singles crowns in the opening leg in Davao City recently.

Amazona beat Allian in the boys’ singles 16-under division finals, 6-4, 6-3, to bag his second title in the second leg of the tournament supported by Smart Sports, Chris Sports, Meralco, Maynilad, Toalson and Head, the official tennis ball.

Carlyn Bless Guarde also snared two titles – 14- and 12-under girls’ singles – in the prestigious national junior tournament, now on its 15th year organized by overall tournament director Juanito Cansino.

Guarde of Sultan Kudarat ripped Patricia Velez, 6-4, 6-4, in the girls’ 14-under titular showdown. She defeated Davao City’s Dana Abad in the girls’ 12-under finals, 6-1, 3-6, 10-7, for her other title.

In other results, Jeff Alqueza outlasted Lordrense Pacheco, 6-4, 6-2,  for the boys’ 14-under crown, while John David Velez of Davao City bashed JV Comendador, 6-1, 6-3, for the 10-under unisex title.

Lenely Milo of Samal copped the girls’ 18- under by whipping Sharyl Delos Santos, 6-1, 6-1, but Delos Santos won over Davao City bet Patricia Velez in the girls’ 16-under, 6-1, 6-1.
