Miriam, Angelicum make Shakey’s volley semis

MANILA, Philippines - Miriam College carved out a 25-13, 25-17 victory over MGC New Life Christian Academy while Angelicum College held off King’s Montessori School, 25-13, 25-19, to complete the Final Four cast in the Shakey’s Girls’ Volleyball League NCR leg at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum last Sunday.

Ana Gomez delivered six kills and three blocks while Angelique Principe and Isabela Romero came away with 12 service aces each as the Miriam tossers closed out with a 3-1 card to finish second behind unbeaten Hope Christian High School in Pool A.

Angelicum, on the other hand, stamped its class in the opening frame then hung tough in the second to thwart KMS and advance to the Final Four of the event sponsored by Toby’s Sports, Mikasa as official ball, Tune Hotels as official residence of the Tournament of Champions, Asics and Volley Prep.

The CSA tossers overpowered St. James Academy-Malabon, 25-5, 25-5, with Ana Gopico spewing eight attacks and three blocks and Samantha Torres and Julia Morado adding seven kills and three blocks between themselves.

The CSA win matched Hope’s sweep of Pool A after the Mighty Sports-backed squad clipped Gen. Pio del Pilar National HS, 25-10, 25-4, as Desiree Cheng, Justine Dorog, Chester Ong and Isabel Molde combined for 28 points and Isabel Molde, Chester Ong and Patricia Jimenez adding two kills and one block apiece.

Hope will face Angelicum while CSA battles Miriam in the crossover semis on Sunday morning with the winners disputing the NCR leg crown in the afternoon and the lone berth in the Tournament of Champions.

Joining them in the T-of-C are the other regional leg winners, led by Southern Luzon champion De La Salle-Lipa and Western Visayas leg winner Central Philippine University, along with Australia’s Victoria High School team, according to tournament director Johanz Buenvenida.
