UniGames: Eagles blast Filamer five; AdU belles up

-

MANILA, Philippines - UAAP four-peat champion Ateneo waylaid Filamer Christian U, 90-50, to open its bid for another basketball crown in the Philippine Sports Commission-University Games in Roxas City last Sunday.

The Eagles have been installed the heavy favorites to capture the cage gold in the absence of the defending champion National U Bulldogs and last year’s runner-up the Adamson Falcons with St. Francis of Assisi College and Bacolod team West Negros University looming as possible title contenders.

In women’s caging, Adamson opened its title-retention bid with an 87-69 rout of St. Benilde while National U outclassed Holy Cross Davao, 100-58, for its second straight win.

St. Louis University kept pace with NU as it pulled off a come-from -behind victory over University of Mindanao, 47-43. UM was ahead by four in the last two minutes but collapsed at endgame, enabling SLU to snatch the win.

In other men’s basketball results, Ateneo de Davao disposed of Foundation U, 82-65, while Cross Davao got past Iloilo Doctors College, 68-59.

In men’s volleyball, last year’s runner-up Foundation U turned back John B. Lacson Maritime Foundation University, 25-22, 25-19, 23-25, 25-21, Holy Cross Davao swept host school Colegio dela Purisima Concepcion, DMMA College of Southern Philippines held Negros Oriental State University in four, University of St. La Salle also hacked out a four-set win over NU, and Iloilo Doctos College swept SLU.

In table tennis, Xavier University beat De La Salle University, 3-1, JLBFMU swept CPC 3-0, and VMA Global College won over Holy Angel University, 3-1.
