Mayweathers in town for bout, avoid scribes

- Abac Cordero -

LAS VEGAS – The Mayweathers are in town – Floyd Sr. and Roger, but not Floyd Jr., who must be holed out in a secret bunker somewhere.

Floyd Sr. made a quiet entrance at the MGM’s main press center, but managed to evade Filipino scribes who tried to get his thoughts on Saturday’s big event.

“Ain’t got nothing to do with it, nothing to do with Shane Mosley, nothing to do with Manny Pacquiao. I have nothing to do with this fight,” he said.

“So, I can’t tell you anything.”

But shortly afterwards, on the far side of the spacious media center, he held court, talking to reporters.

He was overheard saying that Mosley should be at his best in order to get a chance.

“Shane must fight the way he did against (Antonio) Margarito. That’s his only chance,” said the flamboyant trainer.

Mosley, the underdog, knocked out Margarito in the ninth round of their showdown in 2009, then lost to Floyd Jr. last year.

Later on, somewhere inside Mandalay Bay, Pinoy scribes bumped into Roger Mayweather. He had better things to say.

“He’ll still make it a better fight. It doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t win at 40 years old. It’s a matter of how you attack Pacquiao and that’s the difference,” he said of Mosley.

“So we just have to wait and see what happens.”

But he can’t say anything about Pacquiao either, because he said he’d never watched any of the Filipino’s fights.

“I never watched a Pacquiao fight in my life, period. I may watch his fight and Mosley but I never watch his fight. I saw him fight (Juan Manuel) Marquez, but just a round or two.”

He was asked how Floyd Jr. was doing.

“Floyd is OK,” said Roger.

Then came the inevitable question about the dream match - Pacquiao vs Mayweather.

“I want that fight to happen, too. We’ll see who’s the best fighter in the world is. I hope so (that it happens this year). It should happen. There’s enough money on the table. It’s a lot of money, so it should happen,” he said.

Money talks in boxing. But is Floyd Jr.?
