Eagles score; RP U-18 halts Stags

MANILA, Philippines - Ateneo streaked to its third straight victory, beating University of Perpetual Help-Dalta System, 75-60, even as the RP Youth 18-under squad stunned NCAA champion San Sebastian, 93-88, in overtime in the Filoil Flying V Tanduay First Five Pre-Season Invitational Cup at the Filoil Flying V Arena yesterday.

Eman Monfort turned in the lone double-digit output (11) for the Eagles but eight others had eight points as the back-to-back UAAP champions broke away from a close game in the early going with a series of spurts in the second half to fashion out the runaway victory.

The Altas dropped to 0-2.

“We’re trying to accomplish our goal to develop our players this summer so that they’ll be ready come the regular season, so this is a good win for us,’’ said Ateneo coach Norman Black.

Earlier, Kiefer Ravena scored nine of his 30 points in the extra period to power the Nationals to their first victory while dealing the Stags their first loss in two games.

The Nationals trailed by eight points, 70-78, in the last 1:31, but closed out with an 8-0 run, including Ravena’s three-point play, to force the overtime.

In juniors division, JP Sarcia fired a triple at the buzzer as University of Santo Tomas nipped La Salle Greenhills, 80-77, in overtime to post its first win after back-to-back setbacks.

Sarcia drilled in three consecutive treys in the last two-and-a-half minutes in the extra period, including the buzzer-beater to secure the victory for the Tigers.

Kevin Ferrer, the UAAP Season 72 Rookie of the Year, EJ Corre and Ronnie Mison also came up with double-digit outputs of 17, 16, and 13 points, respectively.

The Greenies and the Tiger Cubs battled through two deadlocks in overtime, the last at 77 with 27 seconds left before Sarcia buried that game-winner.

The Tiger Cubs rallied from an 11-point deficit in the second period, pulling to within at 38-40 before Corre’s mid-range jumper tied the game at 40 with four minutes left in the period. – With report from Kristina Villanueva
