Guiao, Lim face suspension, fine

In the aftermath of the tumultuous Red Bull-Talk n Text tiff Thursday, the Bulls may continue to miss the services of coach Yeng Guiao as they play the Welcoat Dragons in the Talk n Text PBA Philippine Cup at the Araneta Coliseum tomorrow.

Under the league rules, an ejection would mean an automatic one-game suspension for a player. "That rule doesn’t apply to coaches but that doesn’t mean coaches can’t be suspended," said PBA technical chief Perry Martinez.

Guiao and Talk n Text team manager Frankie Lim, who figured in a heated verbal tussle triggering a bench-emptying incident in their game Thursday in Tacloban, were summoned to appear at the PBA office today. The two face possible suspension and fine.

PBA commissioner Noli Eala, who was on hand when the two officials pulled their act, set a conference with Lim at 2 p.m. then with Guiao at 2:30 p.m.

Eala also summoned TnT star center Asi Taulava and Red Bull reserve forward Carlo Sharma, who took cheap shots at each other in the second quarter of the game. Apparently, that led to the involvement of Guiao and Lim, who were both ejected from the court.

Meanwhile, Ginebra scoring machine Mark Caguioa sustained his splurge and won a second Accel-Talk n Text PBA Player of the Week honors in the Philippine Cup.

Ginebra coach Jong Uichico said Caguioa deserves the plum, stating: "Mark does what he does best, which is to provide us with the offense. More than the points, however, he can also deliver from the defensive end, making the hustle plays, getting his teammates involved and supply us with the verve when our energy is waning."

In an 87-66 repeat win over Welcoat, Ginebra’s opening day victim, Caguioa scattered 21 points to go with five rebounds, three assists and two steals in 35 minutes.

It turned out Caguioa was just priming up for a much bigger explosion as the 27-year-old notched a conference-high 35 points, 19 in the second half, on top of seven rebounds in a 116-105 come-from-behind win over Air21 last Sunday.
