Praise and protest over "Damaso" act

- The Ear -

CARLOS CELDRAN. Last week, tourist guide and pro-RH bill activist Carlos Celdran burst inside the Manila Cathedral and raised the placard in front of bishops with the word "Damaso." Celdran interrupted the mass to protest the religious leaders' interference in the passage of the Reproductive Health (RH) bill.

DAMASO. Damaso refers to the fictional character Padre Damaso from Dr. Jose Rizal's novel "Noli me Tangere," which tells the abuses of the Spanish friars. Damaso, a Spanish friar, had a daughter by a Filipino woman.

PRAISE AND PROTESTS. Many have expressed their praise or protest over Celdran's actions. A popular PR man said, "protesting at the altar during an ecumenical service is not activism. It is simply uncivilized." Another mediaman said, "I praise his intention but not his action."
