Rare jade vine discovery bares Cagayan forests’ health

BAGGAO, Cagayan, Philippines — The discovery of a rare jade vine or Strongylodon macrobotrys in a remote area in this town has shed light on the ecological condition of forests in Cagayan.

The community environment and natural resources office (CENRO) based in Alcala town documented the discovery to assess the  quality of the plant’s habitat  in Sitio Hotspring, Barangay Asinga Via, where the species was found.

Known for its turquoise-colored flowers, the jade vine is considered as one of the country’s most unique endemic species.

Beyond its visual appeal, the CENRO said the species has scientific importance. As a climbing vine that depends on mature trees and shaded environment, its presence suggests that the surrounding forest still maintains key structural features needed to support sensitive species.

CENRO workers said the plant is vital in sustaining pollinators, particularly bats, which are crucial in dispersing seeds and maintaining a balanced ecosystem.

The jade vine’s specialized pollination system makes it vulnerable to habitat loss, further underscoring the significance of the find.

Indicator species like the jade vine helps scientists gauge the overall health of ecosystems, environment officials said.

The plant’s survival in the area indicates that parts of Baggao’s forest remain relatively undisturbed despite environmental pressures.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources said the discovery of the rare jade vine strengthened sustained conservation efforts, inspiring communities to help protect habitats that support rare and ecologically important species.
