Japan extends P141.4 million grant for Philippines anti-tuberculosis efforts
MANILA, Philippines — The Japanese government will provide a grant of P141.4 million for the Philippines’ efforts to eradicate tuberculosis, particularly in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas.
Japanese Ambassador Endo Kazuya signed and exchanged notes with Andrew Kirkwood, chief of the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS)-Geneva, for the implementation of the initiative.
Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa witnessed the signing of the initiative called “The Project for Enhancing Tuberculosis Screening in Remote Areas in the Philippines.”
Endo cited the over 30 years of support provided by the Japanese government and committed to continue the assistance until the Philippines becomes TB-free.
The Philippines is classified by the World Health Organization as a high-burden country for tuberculosis, with approximately 739,000 Filipinos affected by the disease in 2023.
Through the initiative, Japan will provide 20 ultraportable x-ray units equipped with computer-aided diagnosis technology to health offices in remote areas.
The Japanese embassy said that providing more people with opportunities for TB screening is crucial.
