MANILA, Philippines — President Marcos has appointed lawyer Maisara Dandamun-latiph as chairperson of the Marawi Compensation Board (MCB), which will process the claims of the victims of the Marawi siege.

Dandamun-latiph took the oath of office before Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin at Malacañang on Monday, the Presidential Communications Office said in a statement yesterday.

Dandamun-latiph is a former member of the parliament of the Bangsamoro Transition Authority, the interim government of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao.

Malacañang also announced on Monday the eight members of the MCB. They are Sittie Aliyyah Adiong, Dalomabi Bula, Mustapha Dimaampao, Jamaica Dimaporo, Mabandes Sumndad Diron Jr., Moslemen Macarambon Sr., Romaisa Mamutuk and Nasser Tabao.

Signed in April last year, the Marawi Siege Compensation Act of 2022 provides for the creation of the MCB, which will handle the reparations for qualified claimants whose properties were damaged or lost during the 2017 Marawi siege.

The law also grants private property owners compensation based on the current market value of the land as well as the replacement cost of the structure and its improvements.

Over 100,000 residents were displaced when the Maute bandit group, inspired by the international terrorist organization Islamic State, attacked the city of Marawi on May 23, 2017.

The siege prompted then president Rodrigo Duterte to place the entire Mindanao under martial law.

The armed clashes lasted five months.
