MANILA, Philippines — With the Land Transportation Office (LTO)’s second automated plate-making machine now operational, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) expects the problems in the issuance of motorcycle license plates to be resolved.

In a statement yesterday, the DOTr said this is part of the agency’s modernization efforts to speed up license plate distribution.

The plate-making robot is specifically for producing motorcycle license plates, the DOTr said.

It is the second plate-making machine acquired by the LTO for its facility in Quezon City, with the first machine dedicated for the production of motor vehicle plates.

Transportation Secretary Arthur Tugade said the plate-making machine would address the recurring problems in the issuance of motorcycle license plates.

“This is the first time for us to have a high-tech robot that makes license plates and also first time for us to have two,” Tugade said.

“With the help of this IDE-Robot, we will be able to speed up the distribution of license plates,” he added.

According to the DOTr, the machine is capable of manufacturing 450 motorcycle plates per hour, 3,600 motorcycle plates in an eight-hour shift a day and 7,200 motorcycle plates a day on a two-shift basis.

The machine, which will be manned by two LTO personnel, can produce a total of 158,400 motorcycle plates per month on a two-shift per day basis.

LTO Assistant Secretary Edgar Galvante said the equipment would complement the existing plate-making machine to ensure a more efficient license plate production.
