9 hurt as bridge collapses in Iloilo

ILOILO CITY  , Philippines  —  Nine persons were injured when they, along with 11 others, fell into a river after a hanging bridge collapsed in Mambusao, Iloilo yesterday morning.

The group was joining a funeral procession when they fell into the Panay River in Barangay Pangpang Norte at past 9 a.m., according to town police chief Senior Inspector Rachelle Garnica.

The pallbears had just passed through when the bridge’s cables snapped, according to case investigator Police Officer 2 Ivan Camacho.

The victims including two minors were taken to the Mambusao District Hospital for treatment.

Reports said the bridge sustained damage during the onslaught of Super Typhoon Yolanda four years ago.
