Mind the Gap

Francine Gacrama - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - In this day and age, the information travels faster than the speed of light.   The media and social media constantly bombard us with a variety of adverts ranging from the newest hair trend, to the latest in fashion.  This is where the pairing of Ellen DeGeneres and GapKids bring about an empowering movement for girls to stand on their own amidst all the noise and clutter of what everybody else says you’re supposed to be.  To stand out, to be different, to be unique, and above all to love yourself, despite that noise telling you to be like everyone else.

With her own clothing and lifestyle brand ED, the talk show host and comedian teams up with GapKids to encourage young girls to embrace their individuality and to celebrate who they are. The GapKids x ED collection is built on Gap’s most loved wardrobe staples for girls and Ellen brings her unique vision and style to this beautiful movement. According to Jeff Kirwan, Gap’s global president, the partnership with Ellen Degeneres represents a collaboration between two American style icons. “Ellen has become a global symbol for inspiring her audiences and fans to take pride in who they are.”

The campaign features girl heroes who have exhibited their talents in softball, tennis, gymnastics, music, painting and photography. One of them is Annyka Cayabyab who is making waves in the international golfing scene as she’s taken home trophies from various tournaments around the world. Maxine Montinola and Amanda Francisco are both painters who have shown their creativity at an early age. Yanna Po is a tennis player whose fiery spirit has made her passionate about her sport. Noelle Martinez is a girl who enjoys playing guitar and at the same time excels in various creative fields. Gymnast Mia Gosiengfiao won a gold medal at the 2014 Philippine Cup and even competed in the Prime Cup in Singapore.  Martine Francisco plays catcher for the Asia Pacific Team 2015, the Little League Softball World Series and is also part of the Philippine team which competed in Guam this year.

The collection features T-shirts, hoodies, sweats and leggings that have graphic prints of lightning bolts and speech bubbles that represent encouragement and girl power. The collaboration and social movement is to help all girls realize that they have the power to do extraordinary things and that they should be their most authentic selves.

The limited edition collection is available in Gap Shangri-La Plaza and Central Square, Bonifacio High Street. For more details on the campaign visit www.gap.com.
