The bling ring

Regina Belmonte - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Much like in The Bling Ring, we were robbed once while we were away on holiday. But it was less glamorous and ultimately more devastating to me because the things they took were more than trinkets. They were heirlooms. They were memories. They were history. The jade hairpieces my grandmother wore on the day she married my grandfather probably weren’t that expensive, but to us, they were priceless. That’s the thing about jewelry: more than mere investments (though they are certainly investments), they’re a way to tell stories. Stories about yourself, today, as you wear them. Stories for your daughters and your daughters’ daughters tomorrow and tomorrow.

While you’re waiting for Mom to give you the family diamonds, why not start to build a jewelry collection of your own? Tell your own tale. Get your bling on.

Heavy metal

Classic, understated, timeless pieces, like Bulgari’s B Zero 1 rings, earrings and bangles (in pink, white, and yellow gold; steel, and ceramic) are effortless to dress up or down, and surprisingly easy to lend some edge to. Wear them solo for a touch of simple elegance, or mixed and stacked for a fresh feel. And for a sexier take on timekeeping? The Serpenti watch, always. (Hi, Dad! Just kidding.)

Go for gold

Every collection needs some statement-making, signature, one-of-a-kind shine, and it’s from independent jewelers that you can really pick up those pieces. Intricate handcrafting and delicate design make for some truly unique bling, like these bangles and earrings from Naomi.

All strung up

Put aside the fake pearls you’ve been putting on for years — it’s time for the real deal, and it doesn’t get more real than Jewelmer’s strands of South Sea perfection. Available in varying lengths (though nothing beats the Rope — the longest they have at 115cm or longer — when it comes to versatility), it sometimes takes several years to complete a matched strand. Totally okay, because we’re sure you’ll be wearing them even longer than that.

Starlight, star bright

Often seen on the red carpet, H. Stern’s diamonds dress up many a celeb’s awards night ensemble. Pick some statement sparkle for your collection, like the Stars ring (studded stellar with 29 diamonds), or the luminous Moonlight ring. Or, go for a matched set, like the ocean floor-inspired Iris ring and earrings. And what’s more luxe wrapped ‘round your neck than all 1,188 black diamonds of the Ancient America necklace? H. Stern is available at Adora.
