A horrific comedy of errors

- John Joe Joseph -

MANILA, Philippines - Cult films are movies that do not follow traditional standards of mainstream cinema, creating an instinctive recall whenever discussed. Then there are those obscure films that belong in the “so bad it’s good” category.

Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988)

A huge stretch from the accepted alien invasion story we are all familiar with. Filmmakers combined an innate fear we have concerning visitors from another worlds and a horror some of us have never been able to overcome since childhood. Clowns spelled with a “K.” Effectively elaborate and creative death scenes. All this making up for the tacky acting and horrendous effects. All abductees are encased in cotton candy embryos.

Black Sheep (2006)

Holy sheep! A heap load of fun and a modern version of the drive-in creature features of yesteryear, featuring zombie sheep. This will definitely satisfy mans desire for blood-tingling and rib-tickling stupidity.

A herd of zombies are approaching, let’s get the flock out of here!

Bad Biology (2008)

Sex will never be the same after watching this over-the-top erotic horror flick!

A woman who has a carnivorous vagina and a guy with a monster penis with a mind of its own. A real story about finding the perfect mate. The monstrous organs even have their own obligatory “killer POV” (point-of-view).

Bad Taste (1987)

When people talk blood and guts they talk of Bad Taste. Believe it or not, this is the directorial debut of “Mr. Lord of the Rings” Peter Jackson. Zombie-alien-gorefest!!! And here I was thinking to myself “which movie was that one with the dude who grabs pieces of other people’s brains and puts them in the hole in his head?” Question answered!

Cannibal: The Musical (1993)

What started off as a student project from the minds that gave us the politically incorrect cartoon South Park. A horror with loony characters who break out into song and dance. The memorable parts were the catchy musical sequences and unintentional humor. A cult favorite was the song “Let’s Build A Snowman.”

Troll 2 (1990)

The crown jewel of “worst films ever made.” Which, by the way, has no connection to the movie Troll. And has goblins instead of trolls. Confused? So was I. The only thing that registers in my head is: “Oh. My. God.”

A documentary about the worst film ever made was released last year, aptly called Best Worst Movie — it’s a look at the making of the film Troll 2 and its journey from being crowned the “worst film of all time” to a cherished cult classic.
