Up, up and away

MANILA, Philippines - Handyman joins hands with the Kite Association of the Philippines (KAP) for “Summertime Kite-Flying Fun,” a whole day of kite-making, kite-flying and other outdoor activities for the whole family. It is slated on April 19 at the rear Al Fresco Parking Area of Robinsons Starmills Pampanga, and it is open to the public.

“It will be a whole day of fun under the summer sun,” says Orlando Ongkiko, KAP’s founding president. “We will help them create their own kites and teach them kite flying techniques.” Orly’s better half, Yolly is helping him out — being a kite-maker, designer and KAP’s merchant member herself.

“KAP’s over 100 members is a mix of doctors, carpenters, construction engineers, employees, pilots, artists and corporate bigwigs,” says Jane Yuzon, Handyman marketing manager. “These are all D.I.Y.-ers and crafters who all love kite-flying.” Ongkiko says that kite enthusiasts usually go to hardware shops like Handyman for wood that can be made into dowels, rods, plastic hacksaw blades, sharp knives, file, cutters and other basic kite-making needs. For the artist-kitemakers, Handyman also boasts their Do It Best Quality Paints Centers — a one-stop free computerized paint-mixing services for all kite-painting needs.

 “We are inviting all kite flyers to come with their colorful Guryon or 3D kites and get a chance to win gift certificates from Handyman,” says Yuzon. Kites will be judged according to design and aerodynamic. Those who want to enlist but don’t have a kite can join in the D.I.Y. activities such as the kite or boka-boka making. Registration will begin at 10 a.m. and kite-flying is at 3 p.m.

Other fun activities include the power tools caravan and demo by DeWalt Power Tools. A joyride or free ride on scooters will also be one of the day’s highlights. Aside from the colorful kites that will paint the afternoon sky, KAP promises a kite workshop, flying demo, parachute exhibition, lessons on kite-flying techniques and surprise candy drops.
