Style taken out of context

- Featured Blogger Sasha Manuel -

Choosing what to wear for the day can be as literal as tea bags and hot water. You can pick a top and a bottom from your wardrobe, include some random footwear, and somehow the outfit will make sense. However, if you were to consider yourself a notch more mindful of fashion and style, the act of creating even the most rudimentary ensemble for the commonest of days can be a matter of great significance.

Now, the question on how one would go about creating clothing combinations and learning styling techniques will take center stage. We all know that to some people, the ability to achieve certain looks can be cumbersome especially if the look that the individual is aiming for simply isn’t for him or her. For others, styling can come naturally.

Though it’s true that there are some fundamental styling ideas that a person can use as a foundation to build his or her styling abilities on such as knowing the color wheel and layering, some styling inspirations really come from the ability to express one’s personality. This means accepting who you are – optimizing and maximizing what you are given, and this includes height, weight, shape, hair type and skin tone.

Circumstances may dictate what you’d end up wearing and how you wear them but that doesn’t mean you can’t go beyond that. When it comes to style, a little creativity and spunk will go a long way.

What’s the best way to learn anyway? I prefer immersing myself in my surroundings and let my mind wander a bit as I go along. Though I know I share the journey with someone else, there will be a disparity in experience and interpretation.

I won’t just be looking at a marble statue. I’ll see the soft, feminine dress worn by a Grecian goddess and will try to imagine how she must have felt when she walked the lands amongst mortals in it.

And I won’t simply admire a painting rather I’d marvel at how the colors, texture and lines create a picture that even a child can understand.

Learning how to expand your style isn’t limited to what you read on magazines, watch on television or see in blogs. An activity as simple as a quiet walk, seeing elemental contrasts will help inspire you to fashion your personal style to match what you’ve seen and experienced.

Wild flowers on rugged terrain can be translated into a style that denotes femininity and toughness combined – and I’m not just referring to wearing floral dress and army jackets, though it’s a good example.

Going beyond how your brain would normally react to seeing a car, land and sea, you can train it to see shapes, texture and colors. See how each element in the image you are looking at work with what light there is and how it sparks distinction hence determining the interest value of the visual. You can gather if the combination is appealing or appalling.

The difference you make in your interpretation lies on how you see and experience the context.
