Koji Arsua - The Philippine Star

Party at Intramuros Rising

MANILA, Philippines - Ilvstrados, an Intramuros-based art collective, will hold Intramuros Rising, an indie music festival inside the historic city. Today’s music is courtesy of Saving the Dying Hope, Leo & the Tolstoys, Engkanto, Mellow Submarine, Audio Drive Thru, Head Playback, Soil & Green, Gnarly Dork, RJ Ilano, Pat, and Mr. Bones & The Boneyard Circus. Along with these bands is spoken word poetry from Words Anonymous. This is the best way to support local artists since most of the bands are based in Intramuros. Merriment begins at 4 p.m., with a P100 door charge.

Watch ‘Rabbit Hole’

We were captivated by Nicole Kidman’s performance as Becca Corbett in Rabbit Hole. In the film, she and her husband cope with the death of their child, and her subtle performance as a grieving wife was both painful and elegant. This time, Rabbit Hole will hit the local stage (the material is originally a Tony award-winning play) with Agot Isidro, another actress known for her subtlety and grace. She will be joined by Michael Williams, Ross Pesigan, Che Ramos-Cosio and Sheila Francisco, all veterans in film and theater. This writer was privileged to have seen a rehearsal of the play, and Rabbit Hole could be Agot’s triumphant return to the stage. The play is produced by Red Turnip Theater, whose previous show Cock was a roaring success. Rabbit Hole is directed by Topper Fabregas and will be staged until Aug. 31 at Whitespace, Makati. Tickets are available at Ticketworld.

Meet Jessica Zafra

If you’re a bookworm who grew up in the ‘90s, you’re probably familiar with Jessica Zafra. She’s that kooky journalist who championed world domination using domestic helpers in her Twisted column in the Today broadsheet. Aside from world domination, she also wrote about tennis, her cats, films, and her thoughts and general disdain towards the human race. These days, she writes mostly for Interaksyon but nostalgists, cat lovers and misanthropes can still access her earlier works in the Twisted book series. Today, you can see her good side at the Ayala Museum for Don’t Be a Writer, the first in a three-part lecture series. For today, she will discuss “the horrors, terrors, aggravations, anxieties, pleasures and eventual rewards of the writing life.” If you are a fan of Zafra’s, you’re most likely a writer or an aspiring writer so you’re the target... market. For next month, she will talk about Game of Thrones, fantasy epics, and geek civilization, while October will be the World Domination Report. Perhaps you can give up your futile attempt to become a writer and be part of the DH Army instead?

Splurge at Books for Less

When it comes to bargain book shopping, Booksale holds the throne for the best finds. But what many do not know is that Books for Less is also a treasure trove of hard-to-find tomes. You probably have to dig a little deeper, but there are great finds in their many branches. This month, Books for Less will hold a warehouse sale for the entire month of August, allowing you to fulfill your literary wishlist. On the other hand, the warehouse sale will be a nightmare for hoarders who are trying to save. Come to the dark side…. they have Murakami. Resistance is futile. Books for Less’ warehouse is located at 643 Mercedez Avenue, San Miguel, Pasig.
