MANILA, Philippines - Who to take out on a date: Your mom

Tomorrow is Mother’s Day and the one person you should be taking out on a date is your mother. Drop all your plans and focus on her. After all, she put up with all your teenage juvenalia when you were growing up. Take her out for dinner, a movie, or even just dessert. There are tons of new restaurants and dessert places you can take her to. If you really want to show your love, why don’t you dedicate a day of pampering with a nice massage, followed by a mani and pedi? Or take her out to do something she’s never tried before, like target shooting. Your imagination is your limit, customize the special day to your mom. She’ll remember it for the rest of the year.

What to watch:‘Priscilla, Queen of the Desert’

Drag queens are very much in these days because of RuPaul and the recent release of notorious ringleader of New York’s ‘80s and ‘90s drag scene Michael Alig, who spent 17 years in prison. Now’s a good year for drag and to prove this, Manila is staging a local adaptation of the musical Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, which in turn was adapted from the hit 1994 film. The story revolves around the adventures of two drag queens and a transsexual woman as they travel around Australia on a tour bus. The costumes are fabulous, but equally divine is the musical setlist, which is a mix of ‘80s diva music from Gloria Gaynor, Cyndi Lauper and Diana Ross. The musical has been praised for its costume and musical numbers, so it’s curious how they will adapt it here. The Manila adaptation will star Leo Tavarro Valdez, Jon Santos, Red Concepcion, and Michael Williams. Priscilla, Queen of the Desert will be staged at the Newport Performing Arts Theater starting this week.

Whose art to see:Heart Evangelista’s ‘I Am Love Marie’

We know Heart Evangelista as an actress, singer, and Sen. Chiz Escudero’s girlfriend. But who knew Heart was also a painter, and a good one at that? What she calls “therapeutic” turns out to be an actual gift, and her canvases are large-scale and colorful, reminiscent of Pacita Abad’s. To prove her artistic talent, she has booked a solo exhibit at the Ayala Museum, becoming the second celebrity after Cesar Montano to do so at the esteemed venue. Her first exhibit is called “I Am Love Marie,” and is a collection of 19 works that deal with the plethora of her emotions: from love to hate, self-doubt, melancholy, and joy. Perhaps there will be clues as to her boyfriend’s presidential run in the future? Kidding aside, the works are worth checking out for their beauty and scope. The exhibit will run until May 22.
