MANILA, Philippines - Celebrate good design with Design Week

Kicking off this week in design is Design Week, the twice-a-year celebration of good taste. But this time, the celebration will be moved to the CCP, and additions have been made to the program. Pop-up Market will feature products that celebrate creativity, and has invited Craft MNL, GTMACCON (local and independent comics purveyor), Alterchitecture (an annual architecture design competition), The Curator (makers of fine coffee and cocktails), Pipino Vegetarian, Cucina Andare, and Yardstick Coffee (specialty and indie coffee producers). Design Week will also unveil Design Tours with Hall One, CCP, Kenneth Cobonpue, Kish, LRI Design Plaza, Heima, and Vaporstudio Asia and DDC + VIDA Vapor Interior Design Architecture. On top of that, the organizers have beefed up the Design Talks, featuring renowned industry people such as Dr. Nicanor Tiongson, fashion writer Colin McDowell, PR consultant Nikki Rowntree, Thai designer Anon Pairot, Paris-based designer Arik Levy, Olé Rauberg of DEDON, and Cobonpue. The affair will still hold the celebrated Manila Fame, the bastion of design-forward, high-quality and artisanal-made Philippine products. Manila Fame will be held at the SMX Convention Center until this weekend.

Get into an Escolta state of mind with Saturday Future Market

What started out as an idea to revive the sleepy Escolta and bring back its past as the hippest commercial hub in the city of Manila is now home to the frequently held Saturday Future Market, a gathering of creatives to sell their pre-loved items and handmade goods. The bustling market is the venue for the edgiest DIY stuff, independent labels, limited-edition handmade crafts and artworks. Items range from books and zines, clothes, accessories, CDs, and other random (yet beautiful) things. 98B, the organizers who have made it their mission to revive Escolta, calls it a “bazaar, garage sale, thrift shop, black market and meeting place” rolled into one. Sounds tempting. As an added treat, Anjo Bollarda will be there to do his Nasty Portraits series. Saturday Future Market @ Escolta takes place today at 413 Escolta St., First United Building.

Get into crafts with Paper Pop-up

If you’re in the mood for something daintier, do check out the Paper Pop-up, a weekend bazaar featuring crafts made entirely of paper. From handbound books to stationery, prints, papier-mâché, and washi tapes, there’s something for every hobbyist here. We recommend bringing back the elegant art of letter-writing with personalized stationery at The Candy Shop Prints, and the papier-mâché horses from Takatak Project, just because they’re pretty and they support local craftsmen. Craft MNL has also invited their friends from Prestige Paper Products today to talk about paper. The organizer also promises snacks and surprises. Paper Pop-up will be held this weekend at The Collective. The talk will be from 2 to 4 p.m.
