“The Slim Inspires” exhibit of best student works matched with the latest collections of Swatch at the SM Mega Fashion Hall.

Swatch & Slim’s: All-dressed-up affair

MANILA, Philippines — The iconic brand Swatch and Slim’s Fashion and Arts School celebrated the union of art and functionality at the SM Mega Fashion Hall.

Set against an installation of harsh metal scaffolding are sophisticated, striking garments designed and executed by students drawing inspiration from their school’s founder, Salvacion Lim Higgins — more often referred to as “Slim.” Pieces are deftly engineered and meticulously detailed; some artistically painted or adorned with handmade embellishment.

Watches from Swatch’s latest collections, Skin and A Gala Night, were styled with the students’ works like edgy accessories.

An architectural black terno by Niv Lagman de Leon was accented by Posh N’ Flex, Cento E Lode, Goldig, and Skingala — perfect for a formal night out. The hand-painted jumpsuit with a flash of red peering from a structured collar by Marvien was paired with the ultra-thin Slinhot. Rusanne Casela’s modern take on a wedding dress was accessorized with the eye-catching Pastillo. The little black dress in gazar by Leo Cadete had an elegant Skinscreen to match.

Topping it off was an installation with projections of designs, Swatch watches, and Slim’s own vintage fashion shows on stark white garments. “Slim Inspires” was a provocative exhibition of old and new, of art and functionality, all of which adds up to one word: fashion.

Fashion is everywhere. We admire it, we want it, and we wear it. It is both functional and decorative, and most of the time it stems from a well of creativity.

Today’s well-renowned designers like Joey Samson, Cesar Gaupo, Albert Andrada, Martin Bautista, James Reyes, Ezra Santos, Oliver Tolentino, and Michael Cinco are proud graduates of Slim’s Fashion and Arts School, joining the roster of the school’s notable alumni along with Gang Gomez, OSB, Chito Vijandre, and the late Joe Salazar. Top model and famous photographer Jo Ann Bitagcol is currently a Slim’s student as well. Among the many who annually show their support for the budding designers are Tessa Prieto-Valdes and Irene Marcos-Araneta. The Slim’s spirit is unmistakable and it definitely inspires.

The future looks bright for Slim’s class of 2017.
