Shelter for strays: Animal groups call to unchain, uncage pets amid flooding
MANILA, Philippines — Animal groups and pet lovers renewed their call to pet owners and parents to unleash their pets to give them a fighting chance to survive floods, especially now that Super Typhoon “Uwan” has generated massive floods in areas that it has passed through.
Animal group Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) appealed to pet owners to set free their fur babies in cases where floods arise and they cannot keep their pets with them.
“Please unchain and uncage your pets. Please give them a fighting chance to survive,” PAWS wrote in its caption after reposting photos of animals that perished in past typhoons.
It has also called on kind-hearted individuals to offer shelter to stray animals, as well as food and water and tend to injured pets.
Another non-government organization, CARA Welfare Philippines, similarly appealed to shelter stray animals on its Facebook page.
“When storms rage and the streets flood, the ones who have nowhere to run are the strays. They curl under parked cars, hide beneath stairways, and tremble through the night, cold, hungry, and afraid. For them, every typhoon is not just bad weather. It is a fight for survival.
“Right now, they need us more than ever. A garage, a small covered space, or a box lined with old towels can mean the difference between life and loss. Offering a stray a temporary shelter, even for one night, is a simple act that carries immense compassion. You do not have to adopt, and you do not have to do it alone. You just have to care enough to open your door a little wider. Because to a stray, safety is not just a roof. It is a heartbeat close by, a sign that they are not forgotten,” CARA Welfare Philippines wrote on its Facebook page.
Several other animal rights groups posted about their respective donation drives for animals and pets who are victimized by the recent typhoons, Tino, which battered Cebu and Negros, and Uwan, which currently lashes out in Luzon.
