'80s our way at Promod

CHUVANESS - Cecile Van Straten -

A lot of young ones equate ‘80s fashion with the big hair, shoulder pads, eyeliner and leggings — but I was already fashion conscious at the time. So when French label Promod challenged us to create ‘80s looks from its current collection, I knew I had a lot more to work with.

1) Our team began with a mid-‘80s look that is very Japanese/Amish.

A classic boy blazer is worn over a tailored white shirt, straight skirt, black tights and buckled boots. A hat worn the ‘80s way at the back of the head and round sunglasses (both borrowed from AC+632) complete the look.

2) I still remember when it was hell trying to enter Faces disco as a teenager. It was an achievement just to get in, so it felt so good to be there, even though it was not my scene. Inspired by those times, disco glam was the look we achieved with the beaded shoulders, the sequined skirt, leggings and arm warmers.

Model Ria Bolivar wears her own shoes.

3 and 4) “The chic don’t sweat” was one of our mottos in the ‘80s. “The vain don’t complain” was another. So we had the perfect excuse to wear the occasional trench coat or leather jacket to parties.

We recreated this look through Promod’s leather jacket, silk-screened scarf and tank top, over cropped jeans, knee socks and buckled boots. Beaded strands covered in stretch tulle add a feminine flair.

5) A softer version of biker chic was created through a zippered knit jacket over white camisole and ruffled mini skirt. Black opaque tights not only make the girl look edgier, they make her legs seem longer, slimmer. Not that the model needed help in that department.

6) Couldn’t help but pay tribute to Coco Chanel who is so “in” these days — Promod is a French label after all. We placed a scandalously soft black cardigan over a striped sailor’s tee, pleated trousers and white sneakers, covered her in layers of faux pearls and topped this off with a hat from AC+632.

7 and 8) Finally, a tribute to ‘80s “Borderline” Madonna with a slouchy loose top worn with boy shorts, studded belt, scrunchy socks, fingerless gloves, plus the beaded strands covered in tulle.
