Caltex launches improved Techron with Clean & Glide Technology

MANILA, Philippines — Chevron Philippines, Inc. (CPI) – marketer of a range of petroleum products in the country under the Caltex brand name—announced last week the availability of its new and improved line of different gasoline grades, containing its latest formulation of Techron, now with Clean and Glide Technology.

Caltex’s Techron is the company’s proprietary fuel additive package, that has for years been known to provide its patrons the benefits of proven cleaning performance (of an engine’s intake valves and fuel injectors), resulting in better fuel economy and lower emissions.

Now, these benefits are taken a step further with the new Clean and Glide Technology, which introduces the use of “friction modifiers” in the gasoline—that are designed to protect metal components in the engine, and ultimately improve efficiency, by reducing friction between the moving metal parts.

The promised result may be summarized into providing five benefits, that are increased with further use: (1) improved fuel economy, (2) maximized power, (3) reliable performance, (4) lower emissions, and (5) a smoother drive.

The complete line of the new and improved Caltex gasoline with Techron with Clean & Slide Technology has been made available to the public since last July 1, and will replace all its previous gasoline products. The Caltex Gold 95 with Techron product will now be replaced with the new and improved Caltex Platinum 95 with Techron—now offering 50 percent more of the active ingredients of Clean & Glide Technology, making it a faster-acting product.

“The addition of our new Clean & Glide Technology stays true to the evolving nature of our Techron fuel offering. Our products are continuously being improved in anticipation of future engine technology and local market needs,” explained CPI Country Chair Peter Morris during his speech at the press launch early last week. He furthered that “For motorists, a quick Caltex stop now delivers gasoline grades that help treat their respective cars right, providing additional benefits without compromise.”

To test the lubricating potency of the new gasoline additive formulation, Caltex conducted a modified, High Frequency Reciprocating Rig (HFRR) lubricity test. The test is commonly used on diesels, to determine its ability to protect metal parts in fuel pumps which rely on diesel as a lubricant. The way it is done is by having an oscillating ball bearing placed on a plate, and immersed in a given fuel sample. The friction caused by the ball oscillating on the plate results in scratches on the plate; and measuring the diameters of these consequent scratches helps scientists determine the efficacy of the fuel sample in protecting metal parts (a.k.a. how much it got to reduce the scarring friction). These friction modification properties contained in the sample fuels, are then measured by their coefficient of friction.

As per the HFRR tests that were conducted using new Caltex with Techron and Clean & Glide Technology fuel samples gathered from Asia Pacific and South Africa, the results showed that the new formula contained ingredients that coated and protected metal surfaces, and thereby reduced friction by an average of 41 percent, and metal wear by an average of 38 percent, compared to its previous formula.

CPI relayed that while it is unable to disclose the amount of new Techron with Clean & Glide Technology that is contained in every liter of Caltex gasoline (as this is an industry secret), it does attest that one full tank of the new and improved fuel can clean up a car’s fuel injectors... Further explaining that even more enhanced benefits can be experienced, with continued use of the product, over time.

Furthermore, Morris during the press launch revealed Caltex with all-new Techron’s latest endorser. “We are confident that our best gasoline yet meets expectations, and have enlisted engineering expert Grant Imahara, formerly of Discovery’s Mythbusters series, to creatively demonstrate the benefits of Clean & Glide technology, which will be showcased on television soon.”

The new Techron with Clean & Glide technology will be exclusive to Caltex’s gasoline grades (including Ethanol), and will not encompass Caltex’s Techron D (diesel) formulation. The new Techron will also not be available in a bottle (in the form of TCP—Techron Concentrate Plus), as it is with the previous formula.

Caltex will continue to apply its existing fuel price model to its new line of gasoline with improved Techron; and as such, the different gasoline variants will not be more expensive than how much they currently cost.
