Facebook and Smart’s Talk ‘N text bring basic Internet mobile service without the charge

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Smart Communications, Inc. announced its partnership with Facebook in brining to Filipinos a set of basic mobile internet services.

Internet.org is Facebook’s initiative in bringing basic mobile Internet services to the two-thirds of the world who are not yet connected. In a study, the Internet and Mobile Marketing Association of the Philippines estimates that only 38 percent of the country’s population had Internet access in mid-2014.

With Facebook’s initiative, Internet.org has already provided its services in six countries including Colombia, Ghana and Zambia, allowing people to browse useful and informative websites without the data charges.

Facebook’s Markku Makelainen said,“We are working with operators, content partners and governments from all over the world to address the barriers that prevent people from connecting and joining the knowledge economy.”

“Smart’s partnership with Facebook is a big boost to our ‘Internet for All’ campaign,” said Smart President and Chief Executive Officer Napoleon Nazareno. “We are making useful information within reach of millions of Filipinos.”

Philstar.com is likewise excited to be one of the websites featured by Internet.org. Bringing relevant news and information to more people is one Philstar.com’s goals.

“Free access to news will help breed an informed society. An informed society will help us make better choices, hopefully leading us to a better way of life," said Rose Anne Belmonte, Philstar Global Corp.'s chief operating officer.

“This partnership is a proof of Philstar’s commitment in delivering news and information relevant to all Filipinos here and in abroad. A well-informed Pinoy can participate actively in nation building," said Jules Salonga, Philstar vice president of operations.

Smart, TnT and Sun subscribers can now have access to 24 websites including Philstar.com’s news. All they have to do is either download the Internet.org app on Google Play or by texting INTERNET to 9999.

After the event, action star Robin Padilla huddled the group for "groufie." Check out the photo!
