The importance of makeup remover

CLARITY - Clara Pettersen - The Philippine Star

Right after going out with friends or having a late-night dinner, all we want to do once we get home is get under the sheets and go right to bed. But, no matter how tired we are, we must never break one of the most important rules of beauty: removing our makeup before we go to sleep.

The reason this is so important is because our skin regenerates itself while we’re asleep. If we have makeup that stops our pores from breathing, this also stops the natural rejuvenation of our skin. Because the pores are congested, this can cause breakouts, fine lines, puffiness and dark circles. If you haven’t been removing your makeup all your life, that’s fine. We all do it. But it’s never too late to change that habit, and your skin will thank you for it.

One reason I don’t remove my makeup is because I’ve run out of makeup remover. But guess what, you can make your own natural makeup remover at home with just some aloe vera water and extra-virgin olive oil. To start things off, pour a little less than a cup of extra-virgin olive oil into a bottle of aloe vera water. Because the oil is hydrophobic, the olive oil should be resting on top of the water.

Using oil on your face might sound a bit intimidating, but olive oil is extremely beneficial to your skin. It won’t clog pores, keeps your skin soft, and won’t dry it out, while aloe vera has a cooling sensation and is a powerful healing agent. Put together, they make an inexpensive and topnotch makeup remover.

When using this makeup remover, you have to shake the bottle first, and before the two separate again, pour a few drops onto your cotton pad. When removing makeup I would suggest first removing your lipstick, then eye makeup, then the base. When removing eye makeup, leave it on the area for a few seconds before wiping it off. This gives the olive oil ample time to break down the pigment and dissolve the mascara.

After removing your makeup, remember that washing your face is just as important. You can wash your face with any deep-cleansing or ordinary facial wash.

Always remember that the best foundation for makeup is a healthy and clean face, just as a clean canvas is always the first step in creating art. If you spend as much effort on taking off your makeup as you would putting it on, you’ll be astonished to see the difference it makes on your complexion and look.
