Local artists jam for help

PERSONAL CHOICE - Frannie Jacinto - The Philippine Star

When my childhood friend Ruby Quirino-Gonzales invited me to attend a musical fundraiser with a promise that it would be an outstanding one, she was correct because there were three of the country’s best artists that I am a huge fan of: Lea Salonga, Cecille Licad and Martin Nievera.

Jammin’ For Help, Thanking The World was conceived by Gina Tabuena Godinez as a way to thank the nations who came to our immediate aid when the disastrous typhoon Yolanda struck.  They included our former colonizers and currently best allies — the US, Spain and Japan, as well as the Middle East, neighboring Asian countries, and the European Union.  Not to be outdone, there was also the not-too-friendly nation who, despite infringing on our shores, sent aid as well.

Lea Salonga sung all time favorites with her soaring voice, but the ice breaker was a medley of Broadway songs that made us break into applause. The concert became a sing-along session.

Cecille Licad’s  precise clear notes that were played from memory kept us enthralled, especially when one could see on the large screen how she literally felt and breathed her music while performing on the grand piano.

Energetic Martin Nievera’s forceful voice always delights with his playful ways that endear him to the audience.  He joined  the crowd, even sitting on their laps to take selfies, all the while performing without losing a beat.  Talk about multi-tasking and this guy certainly can do it.

As an added bonus, there were two guest performers that we enjoyed listening to.  One was Fitri Cerado with a mature voice and poise that belied her young age.  Handsome Los Angeles-based Ryan Gallagher was asked by Martin Nievera to come onstage and sing a Filipino love song because of a bet with Piky Lopez who promised more funds to the coffers if Ryan would sing.   To the delight of everyone, not only could Ryan sing in Tagalog, but his pronunciation was perfect, too.  He was the best eye candy for the swooning ladies of all ages.
