Notes on totes

- The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines -The tote bag is a hard worker a real multitasking handbag that denotes the complexity of roles that women play today. It is known as “the everything bag,” with a great design versatility that can fit into almost any woman’s lifestyle: for the working woman who carries a laptop and documents; for the traveler on a weekend getaway; or for the modern woman who has to keep her cards, cosmetics, and mobile phone handy.

A tote is a hardworking fashion handbag that defies time. It is actually on the list of Top Ten Fashions that never go out of style.

The first signature tote bags were the Boat Bags designed and sold by LL Bean in 1944. The bag was in canvas and, as its name implies, was designed for the sailing crowd.

It quickly caught the attention of women from all over the world, and it was not long before handbag designers took notice of the tote trend and created stylish tote bags. One of the earliest was Bonnie, a popular designer who worked for Coach who was behind the iconic Cashin Carry tote bag that was a big trend in the 1960s. Later, in the 1990s, Kate Spade started a line of totes that were truly feminine, making it more desirable to women.

Today, totes are as popular as ever at SM, where brights, neutrals, and prints play off in different materials subtle calfskin, rich patents, snake embossed leather, heavy canvas, ballistic nylon, and even jelly totes. Take your pick from totes from Parisian Bags, Grab, Kimbel, Secosana and Belladonna collections at the Ladies Bags Department of all SM stores.
