UPTOWN DOWNTOWN - Joanne Zapanta-Andrada - The Philippine Star

Raffles Design Institute has earned its reputation to be a training ground for fresh talent for fashion design and marketing.  This Sunday, Uptown/Downtown features three of the school’s promising fashion design students.

Jeline Catt

Apart from being a student, 18-year-old Jeline is also a digital style publisher, online influencer and the creative mind behind the blog, Sartorialust. Jeline is a passionate young creative who embodies a feminine and classy style, which is translated into her designs. Her fashion philosophy is a statement made by Coco Chanel: “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, on the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” She  is able to draw inspiration from any environment. For this shoot, she designed a gown inspired by Spring and flower gardens in blush tones.

Nicole Vargas

Before attending Raffles Design Institute Manila, Nicole Ashley Vargas would spend most of her time drawing, skating, taking photographs, writing poetry, making D-I-Y or do-it-yourself clothes and accessories, in addition to shopping. The strife in her life includes the pursuit of perpetual happiness, not only for herself but for the rest of those in the universe. What inspires her is making a change for the greater good. With the art she designs, she hopes to initiate and create a company of fashion for a cause. Of her gown, Nicole explains, “Although blue, this dress was meant to look like a gown to be worn on the red carpet. Soft to touch, this dark blue charmeuse fabric is sure to look marvelous on any skin tone.”

Ameena Aquino

On her freshman year as a designer, Ameena believes that fashion should be fun and able to express one’s self. “Fashion isn’t just about how a person dresses but also the way he or she pulls it off with attitude. It’s like telling a story through the clothes. I’d have to say my personal style would be laid-back but also fashionable. There are days when I don’t feel like dressing up and there are days when I want to look like a celebrity on the red carpet. My fashion icons are Nicole Richie and Lana Del Rey. Although their styles are very different from each other, Lana being more vintage and Nicole being more edgy, I love how both can pull off their individual styles and just be so confident,” Ameena shares. For this shoot, she designed an edgy one-piece dress in white. (To be concluded)
