Paper dolls

UPTOWN DOWNTOWN - Joanne Zapanta-Andrada - The Philippine Star

This season, designer Rem Divino presents his collection of ultra-feminine yet bold dresses that would delight any woman. For this line, he uses a mix of chiffon, lace trimmings and tulle with touches of silver. What inspired his collection? Divino explains, “I have always been fascinated by cut-out dolls. In this digital age, we do not see this anymore. I particularly find the concept of silhouette-cutting to be a delightful yet sadly lost art. The craft was very in demand during the pre-French Revolution era. Rich families would invite an artist to attend an extravagant party. He would observe the guests and cut out profiles of the guests. This was during the time of Marie Antoinette, so you can imagine how elaborate everything was. The wigs alone were about two feet high!”

Another noticeable aspect of Divino’s collection is his choice of color — tea rose. “Tea rose is a very feminine color,” he says. “It is so easy to go extremely soft with this tone. By punching in some black cutouts, I add strength and character to the ensemble. I like to show off my clients’ girly side but I do not want to leave out the woman in them either. I think this collection captures both qualities quite effectively.”

Divino shares that the outfits he creates are amply embellished and so only a few added accessories are needed to complete the look. Onyx or silver teardrop earrings, a slim bracelet and purse should be enough to look stunning.

He concludes, “And like a paper doll, one should always learn how to have fun with the concept of dressing up. Fashion should be enjoyable, inspirational and exciting if it is to be anything at all!”
