Ligo Sardines: From everyday staple to everyday impact
The program also reached families and children through school feeding efforts in Bulan, providing more than 200,000 sardine-based meals to over 5,300 children and supporting a classroom initiative for the community.

MANILA, Philippines — For many Filipino families, Ligo Sardines has long been one of those familiar staples that quietly shows up at mealtime—reliable, easy to prepare and comforting in the way everyday food often is.

Today, that place in daily life is matched by a growing commitment to support the people and communities behind every can.

That commitment comes to life in “Padagos, Bulan,” a community-based sustainability initiative in Bulan, Sorsogon. Building on earlier efforts under “Sustenido Bulan,” the program helps promote more responsible fishing practices, improve fish handling and strengthen the long-term resilience of local fishing communities.

Sardines remain one of the most affordable seafood-based protein sources in the country, making work like this meaningful not only for fisherfolk, but for Filipino families who continue to rely on them as an everyday staple.

Through the initiative, more than 600 fisherfolk joined orientations on proper fish handling and sustainable practices, helping improve fish quality and reduce waste. Rejection rates for poor-quality fish improved from 13% to 3%.

The program also helped open more livelihood opportunities, supporting over 3,400 quality manufacturing jobs and skills training for 300 fisherfolk wives.

Beyond livelihood, the program also reached families and children through school feeding efforts in Bulan, providing more than 200,000 sardine-based meals to over 5,300 children and supporting a classroom initiative for the community.

It is a reminder that sustainability can be both practical and deeply human—protecting resources, while also helping families build more secure futures. For a brand that has long been part of Filipino kitchens, this is a natural next chapter: continuing to matter not only at the table, but beyond it.

This meaningful work was recently recognized at the PRCA APAC Awards, where “Padagos, Bulan” was honored in the CSR and Sustainability category. Organized by PRCA Asia Pacific—launched in 2018 with the aim of raising standards in PR and communications—the awards recognize outstanding achievement, creativity and innovation across the industry.

For Ligo, the recognition affirms that legacy is not only about being part of Filipino life for generations, but also about continuing to create a positive impact where it matters most.
