MANILA, Philippines — The disinformation concerning the health of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is meant to destabilize the country, the Presidential Communications Office (PCO) said.

In a statement on Thursday, April 9, the PCO said that its Anti-Fake News Desk has detected a surge of disinformation across social media targeting Marcos’ health.

“We are in a state of energy emergency. The president will not be distracted by this noise. The president remains laser-focused on one mission: solving our energy emergency and delivering real, tangible help to every Filipino family, improving their lives and strengthening our economy,” PCO’s statement read.

“The timing is suspect. Why the sudden surge at this time? Why resort to outright lies? Why the desperation? Regardless, the motive is clear. Distract and destabilize our government,” it added.

The PCO said that it is tracking “every comment, and every lie,” which will be used as evidence in court.

Amid online speculation about his health, alleging he is ill, Marcos assured the public he is healthy.

“I’m struggling kasi ayoko tumaba ulit, nawala na 'yung taba ko, parang babalik,” Marcos said.

(I'm struggling because I don't want to regain the weight I've already lost. It feels like I'm getting fat again.)

On April 7, the PCO, through its Acting Secretary Dave Gomez, filed criminal complaints against a Facebook page called “Malasakit New Pilipinas” for spreading a series of fabricated reports designed to trigger public panic amid the country's current energy emergency.
