MANILA, Philippines — The University of the Philippines continues to slip in the Times Higher Education’s Asia University Rankings for the third consecutive year, but it still maintains its spot as the second-best among four Philippine institutions included in the rankings.

Meanwhile, Ateneo de Manila University has charged ahead of the pack, making its debut ranking as the 84th-best university in Asia overall and the only Philippine university to land in the top 100.

Mapúa University also joins for the first time this year as the fourth-best Philippine university, landing a spot in the 601+ bracket. For 2023, THE ranked 669 schools for its Asia University Rankings, up from last year's 616.

UP ranked 65th among all Asia universities in 2020. This went down to 84th in 2021, then 129th in 2022.

De La Salle University's ranking also went down a notch this year, placing in the 501-600 compared to last year's 401-500. It was also placed in the 401-500 bracket in 2020.

Ateneo was previously tagged with a “reporter” status in 2022, which means it was active in the ranking process but failed to make it into the rankings.

According to the UK-based education magazine, its Asia University Rankings 2023 uses the same 13 performance indicators as its World University Rankings, but “they are recalibrated to reflect the attributes of Asia’s institutions.”

According to THE, its performance indicators are grouped into five areas: teaching (the learning environment); research (volume, income and reputation); citations (research influence); international outlook (staff, students and research); and industry income (knowledge transfer).

“The universities are judged across all their core missions – teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook – to provide the most comprehensive and balanced comparisons available,” it said on its website.

Based on the results posted for each university, Ateneo de Manila University outranked the three other schools in all performance indicators except for industry income (37.6 points), where it was beaten by UP (41.4 points).

Ateneo scored highest in citations (97 points), compared to UP (62.5), De La Salle University (23.6) and Mapua University (8.6).

China’s Tsinghua University topped the rankings for the fifth year in a row.
