MANILA, Philippines - Will Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada seek reelection or a higher position in 2016?

In a televised press conference after the Supreme Court dismissed the disqualification case against him, Estrada reiterated that he is planning not to run in the next election.

"This is my last hurrah. Wala akong hinahangad na tumakbo pa," said Estrada.

He believes Manila Vice Mayor Francisco Domagoso, his preferred successor, can continue his programs.

But Estrada said he may seek another term in 2016 if Domagoso aspires for a different position.

"If the vice mayor will run for another office, well, I might change my mind and run for reelection again. And that is coming from my heart," he said.

And when asked if he might seek a higher position, Estrada, a former president, also hinted at the possibility of staying in politics.

"Sa ngayon wala akong binabalak na tumakbo ng mas mataas na posisyon. Sa ngayon," he stressed, drawing applause and cheers from his supporters inside the Manila City Hall.

"Kapag hiningi tayo ng taumbayan eh wala tayong magagawa," he added when pressed later on what could change his mind.

Voting 11-3, the Supreme Court en banc dismissed the disqualification case filed by former Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim against Estrada.

Estrada left the presidency in 2001 amid allegations of corruption. He was sentenced to lifetime imprisonment in 2007 but was later pardoned by former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

He lost in the 2010 presidential election but he managed to grab nine million votes, placing behind President Aquino.
