Filipino peacekeeper from Liberia has fever

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health (DOH) on Friday said a Filipino United Nations peacekeeper earlier deployed in Ebola-hit Liberia in West Africa has fever and showing signs of weakness.

The DOH said over radio dzBB that the unidentified peacekeeper, quarantined along with 132 others on Caballo Island off Manila, developed fever.

Acting Health Secretary Janette Garin, however, assured the public that the Philippines is still Ebola-free.

She also reiterated that the peacekeepers previously tested negative from Ebola, as the United Nations had confirmed.

Symptoms for Ebola include nausea and vomiting, possibly bloody diarrhea, red eyes, rashes, chest pain and cough, stomach paid, severe weight loss, bruising and bleeding usually from the eyes, according to the World Health Organization.

The Filipino soldiers and police back home from peacekeeping duties in Liberia were headed to an island quarantine Wednesday as a precaution against the Ebola virus.
