Funfare with Ricky Lo

Their best & their worst

CONVERSATIONS - Ricky Lo - The Philippine Star

Opening on Wednesday, Nov. 16, is Star Cinema’s The Unmarried Wife, directed by Maryo J. delos Reyes and starring Dingdong Dantes, Angelica Panganiban and Paulo Avelino. It’s Dingdong’s third time to work with Angelica (after Segunda Mano and One More Time), and the first for Paulo, no wonder it took a while before Paulo opened up. First-time jitters, you know.

In the movie, Angelica plays a character with a trauma about relationships. When she meets and marries Dingdong’s character, she thinks all is well until she catches Dingdong with another woman. Dingdong tries to win her back, to no avail. So, Angelica falls for her friend (Paulo).

In real life, Dingdong is happily married to Marian Rivera (with whom he has a one-year-old daughter, Zia); while Angelica is happily single (successfully moved on after her break-up with John Lloyd Cruz) and so is Paulo (rumored to be courting commercial model Natasha Villaroman, from the Ecleo family of Surigao del Norte).

Have you ever wondered what “the best” and “the worst” are in the three stars’ lives?

Decision they have ever made

Dingdong: Best, to get married.

Angelica: For this year, the best is when I accepted The Unmarried Wife.

Paulo: The best is to pursue acting. The worst is to stop studying.

  • Vacation they have ever spent (so far)

Dingdong: Palawan (with Marian and Zia), 2015.

Angelica: The best is when I visit my relatives abroad. The worst, so far, is I’ve gone back to (South Korea) twice pero may pagka-rude ang mga naging encounters ko. What a waste. The trips were expensive and the food is good.

Paulo: Best vacation is, of course, when I am at the beach and the sun is out. The worst is when I am at the beach and there’s a storm… unless you wanna surf.

  • Day of their lives

Dingdong: Today.

Angelica: Best day? Nung nakilala ko siya, echos! (Laughs) The worst? Kapag binubuwisit ako ni Ayen, my PA. Not really. I can’t say what is worst kasi gusto ko positive lang, masaya lang. (Laughs) So kapag may pangit na nangyayari, lagi akong nagda-drugs para positive ako. (Laughs) No, what I do is think of happy things so that I can go in a positive direction, so that at the end of the day I can say that my day is still okay.

Paulo: Best day is when you wake up and you have a free day for yourself. Worst day is probably almost every Monday.

  • Time of day

Dingdong: Best, it changes. Worst, same.

Angelica: Best time? Around five o’clock in the afternoon. That’s when I am fully awake. Worst? When the call slip says I have to be on set at seven or eight in the morning, because it means I have to wake up at five or six in the morning. That’s really the worst.

Paulo: Best time of the day is midnight. Worst time of the day is lunch time. Twelve at lunch time.

  • Roles they have played

Angelica: Best, uhm, ano ba? I think in this one, Unmarried Wife. This is the most mature role that I have played so far.

Paulo: Best roles I’ve played is probably Nathan in Walang Hanggan; it’s one of the best. The worst is probably…when I was inconsistent with a certain movie I’ve done.

  • Comment on their performance in a movie

Dingdong: The best, sana may part three. The worst, K tnx bye.

Angelica: Best? Every time they say that they like my performance, na nakaka-relate sila. It’s big deal to me because your goal when portraying a character is to make the audience relate to it, that your movie mirrors the same experience that happened to them. The worst? Na ang taba ko raw! Performance ba? Nakaka-relate ako dun sa ano, eh, kasi when they say that I’m mataba, was I lazy because of that, na tinamad ako? Ganoon.

Paulo: Best comment is I’m improving, and the worst comment is probably, uh, just a stereotype.

The three stars with director Maryo J. delos Reyes

  • Person they have ever known (no names for worst)

Angelica: Best person? They are so many. There’s Cherry Pie Picache, sina Eguene Domingo, sina Judy Ann Santos. They are the ones whom I look up to as far as acting is concerned, sa work at sa life.

Paulo: Best person is my son. The worst is probably terrorists.

  • City they have visited

Dingdong: San Sebastian, Spain.

Angelica: Worst siguro, mag-EDSA na tayo, no? We don’t have to go somewhere else, do we? Best? What’s the best? What’s my favorite city? Yes, New York City.

Paulo: One lang, no? Probably Münster in Germany, only because I really enjoyed my friends’ company there. And worst is probably a certain city, South of France, only because I couldn’t speak their language.

  • Part of their body

Dingdong: Best, left index knuckle. Worst, right index knuckle.

Angelica: Best, my legs. Worst, also my legs dahil puro sugat. (Laughs). Especially my knees kasi dyan siya napupunta lagi…sugat, pasa, lahat!

Paulo: Best part of my body is, I think, my eyes. And the worst part of my body is, I think, my belly.

  • Book they have read

Angelica: Best, childish but yes, J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter. I am impressed by her imagination and storytelling style. Worst? Can’t remember any because when I don’t like a book, I just don’t continue reading it, binibitawan ko na.

  • Movie they have seen

Angelica: Best, Captain Fantastic. Worst…well, I can’t really say worst but recently I saw The Client set year 2000 yata or is it 1997? Uhm, with Susan Sarandon pa mandin! I guess I expected so much, so…

Paulo: Best movie I’ve seen, there’s a lot so I’ll just choose a classic, Raging Bull. And the worst is Twilight.

  • Way to cope with a break-up

Dingdong: Best, don’t break up. Worst, take it back an hour after you break up.

Angelica: Travel.

Paulo: Best way is to be with friends. And the worst is to get wasted.

  • Way to win their friendship and trust

Dingdong: Best, buy me a cold beer. Worst, buy me a warm beer.

Angelica: Be loyal.

Paulo: Best way is to be consistent. And the worst is to pretend.

  • Time to soul search

Dingdong: Best, while in traffic. Worst, while putting on socks.

Angelica: Best, when you’re alone. That’s when you can talk to yourself and review that decision that you have made, what’s right and what’s wrong, saan ka nag-enjoy, saan hindi. And what you should fix.

Paulo: Best time to soul search is in the middle of the year when you get really busy, and everything is just so chaotic with your schedule. And worst time to soul search is…I don’t know when.

  • Thing about themselves

Angelica: I’m so funny, and great, and beautiful, and amazing, and loyal. I’m such a package. I’m a package deal, hahaha!!!

Paulo: Best side is, I think, I genuinely care for the people I love. And the worst is, I think, I think, I’m forgetful.
