Janice de Belen honored for inspiring journey as a mom

Jerry Donato - The Philippine Star

Seasoned actresses like Janice de Belen have received accolades from nominations to awards at some point in their careers. They may view these recognitions as a pat on their back for the passion and commitment they’ve displayed, craft-wise.

Recently, she was feted with the Heroes of Home award, honoring her inspiring journey as a mom and her contribution to her chosen field. It’s a role she takes on with love and devotion away from the klieg lights.

The award is a special recognition that a person may receive once-in-a-lifetime.

A piece of information from the publicity team behind the event, organized by the wellness brand Swiss Proli, describes Janice as an “award-winning actress and television personality with a decades-long career defined by versatility, longevity and audience trust. She is also a devoted mother of five who has long balanced her craft with family life.”

Her fellow awardees from entertainment were singer-actress Angeline Quinto, choreographer-G-Force founder Georcelle Dapat-Sy, actress-digital creator Moi Bien, actress-host Via Antonio and entrepreneur-lifestyle personality Cat Arambulo-Antonio.

The other 10 outstanding honorees, on the other hand, came from the science and business industries.

“I think a modern mom is able to adapt to situations we never had the chance to experience,” said Janice in a recent group chat following the awarding ceremony. “Of course, when you talk about different generations, you also talk about different practices of moms and different sensitivities when it comes to their children.”

“So, now is a different time. If you won’t adapt, mahihirapan ka (you will have a hard time). Ikaw yung ma-i-i-stress (you’ll get stressed). Ikaw yung malulungkot, ma-de-devastate (You’ll feel sad and devastated). So, I think that is the definition of a modern-day mom,” added she.

Yes, she’s someone who can understand what kids and young people go through these days.

The actress also shared that as a single parent, she doesn’t have “the luxury of time to expound on things,” like explaining “the birds and the bees.”

Her approach was this: “‘wag na tayong mag-beat around the bush (Don’t beat around the bush). You know, let’s tell them what exactly we talk about. Let’s not use flowers and animals. Let’s be very definite… You need to be direct to the point, and I think I have been direct to the point with my children.”

She also shared that the moment she gets home, she is no longer the star people get to know through magazines, TV and social media, as one could gather by following her thoughts. Janice is wearing the hat of a mom.

She also remembered that she was able to attend the graduations of her kids, and when the latter were still studying, her work schedule back then allowed her to be home and spend time with them.

Fast forward to now: her children are grown-ups, establishing their names and making their own decisions.

Her advice to them is, “You just hope and pray that you raised them well at tama yung mga advice mo sa kanila (and that your pieces of advice to them are correct). I just tell them whatever it is you choose to do, make sure kaya mo yang panindigan (you can stand by it)… You have to use your own diskarte, di ba? (you have to strategize and be smart).”

“When it comes to love, I tell them the same thing,” added she, who loves and trusts her children.

As for her next acting project, Janice said that she just wrapped up one but was not allowed to give details about it.

She concluded the brief interview with a message to fellow moms: “Enjoy being a parent. It’s not always rosy… just enjoy your children while you can.”

By the way, Swiss Proli is “a wellness brand dedicated to creating high-quality, science-based supplements that promote balance, vitality and overall well-being,” according to information given to this paper. Its first-ever Heroes of Home Award was a “tribute to working mothers whose quiet strength, love and sacrifices shape the heart of every home,” it added.
