SOUNDS FAMILIAR - Baby A. Gil - The Philippine Star

You really have to hand it to those marketing guys in the Disney kingdom for always cooking up ways to keep the Disney label selling merrily year in and year out. And here is their latest gimmick, The Disney Legacy Collection. You know that everybody celebrates anniversaries and Disney is no different. And so it has found a way to celebrate its anniversaries with something that Disney fans will surely find irresistible. This is a series of albums that will commemorate the market release of important Disney movies.

Example. Think back to when Beauty And The Beast was released and you will get a refurbished Beauty And The Beast soundtrack on that date. Or what about Pinocchio which is turning 75 years old next year or Mary Poppins which will be 50 years old. I can’t believe it has been that long. And because The Lion King was released in 1994 and therefore turning 20 this year, Walt Disney Records is inaugurating its Legacy Collection by releasing a new The Lion King soundtrack album. I assure you that it is somewhat different from The Lion King soundtrack that I am sure you already have.

The Legacy Collection features songs and bits of the music score from the soundtrack of the movie, plus demos and in this case that famous version of Can You Feel The Love Tonight performed by Elton John. There are also Circle Of Life, I Just Can’t Wait To Be King, Hakuna Matata and others. And I do not know if it is because I had been watching the movie more than listening to the soundtrack these past 20 years or simply because a studio engineer did something incredible to the mixes of the original recordings. But these tracks are simply brilliant with jungle sounds and warm, exciting tones coming out of the speakers. You say you already have the video and the old album? Give this one a listen and marvel at the difference.

Now just in case you are thinking of ways to make the Disney Princesses in your life incredibly happy this coming Christmas Season, I have just discovered the album they will surely play day in and day out everywhere. This is Now That’s What I Call Disney Princess by Various Artists from the original Disney Soundtracks. This is part of the Now series of hit compilation albums but instead of having cuts from various labels, it is made up of all Disney songs. And not just regular Disney tunes. These were all taken from Disney Princess movies where the girls are in the lead. This is why there is no Can You Feel The Love Tonight here. Simba of The Lion King was no princess. But Belle is and there are several tunes from Beauty And The Beast in the line-up.

Some of those included are: Kiss The Girl from The Little Mermaid; Colours Of The Wind from Pocahontas; A Whole New World from Aladdin; That’s How You Know from Enchanted; Reflection from Mulan; A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes from Cinderella; I See The Light from Tangled; Beauty And The Beast from Beauty And The Beast; Once Upon A Dream from Sleeping Beauty; True Love’s Kiss from Enchanted; Someday My Prince Will Come from Snow White; When We’re Human from The Princess And The Frog and there are many more titles in the 44-track album.

Speaking of Disney sounds and to be more specific of Beauty And The Beast, I am sure that you have already heard of what promises to be the ultimate treat for Disney fans next year. This is the spectacular touring production of the musical Beauty And The Beast that Ovation Productions is bringing to the Main Theater of the Cultural Center of the Philippines on Jan. 11 to 25, 2015.

The show is a wondrous opportunity to see Belle, Beast, Gaston, Mrs. Potts, Lumiere and Pip, which was the name of the little teacup that was so cute while dancing on stage, come to life. Prepare for the incredible Be My Guest number, see how the Beast transform into a prince right before your eyes and sing along to all those tunes that not only kids have come to love.
