Body Talk with Lorna Tolentino

FUNFARE - Ricky Lo -

This Christmas won’t be any different for Lorna Tolentino and Rudy Fernandez.

“As usual,” said Lorna, “We are spending it quietly — at home.”

That is, with their sons Rap-Rap and Renz — and Rudy’s son Mark Anthony Fernandez who will surely drop by with his wife and child — and Lorna’s 10 dogs (Koochi, Kochay, Kikay, Kobe, Kogie, Klifford, Snowy, Sarah, Amaru and Jack).

But on the day before Christmas, Lorna will join Jinggoy Estrada and other co-stars (Shaina Magdayao, Eugene Domingo, Bayani Agbayani, Rayver Cruz, Dick Israel, Vangie Labalan, Liza Lorena, Arron Villaflor, Jinggoy’s son Jullian and Opposition lawyer Adel Tamano in a special role as a barangay chairman) on the float of Katas ng Saudi, Maverick Films’ entry in this year’s Metro Manila Filmfest, written and directed by Joey Javier Reyes, which is the story of an OFW (Jinggoy) and how his family (Lorna as his wife, and Shaina and Jullian as their children) copes in his absence.

Asked how she “internalized” her role, Lorna said, “I have several relatives living abroad and, like OFWs, they know how it feels to be away from home.”

One of the original sex goddesses of the ’80s, Lorna at fortysomething looks as young as  she did when she was launched as the title role in Dulce Amor, Ina. An in-demand endorser, popularly for Flawless (sister company of Dr. Vicki Belo’s The Belo Medical Group) and Poten-Cee (by Pascual Laboratories), she has made people wonder what her “secret formula” is for keeping herself fresh and youthful and, ehem, desirable. Lorna stands 5’4"; weighs 128 lbs.; measures 36-27-38; and wears medium-size shirts and size-6.5 shoes.

Let’s find out in the following “body talk”:

What diet do you follow?

“You know, I’ve tried all kinds of diet, including Mary Prieto’s 3-Day Miracle Diet which I read about in The Philippine STAR and the South Beach Diet. And even the diet according to your blood type, the vegetarian diet and other kinds of diet.”

By “tried,” does it mean that any or all of these diets didn’t work for you?

“You know, the bottom line is, even if you go on a rigid diet, you still have to exercise, whether cardio like badminton or working out in the gym. Your diet is effective only if accompanied by regular exercise.”

Have you tried the six-small-meals-a-day diet?

“When I was doing the gym regularly, yes.”

So what kind of diet are you following now?

“Mary Prieto’s 3-Day Miracle Diet. I’m on my third day. Mabilis ‘yon. You can stop one day and then resume it the next day. Is it a starvation diet? No, it’s not. You can lose four pounds in three days. For breakfast, I take two pieces of wheat bread with one teaspoon of peanut butter and one half grapefruit; for lunch, a piece of toasted bread with three pieces of sardines; and for dinner, an apple with vanilla ice-cream, half cup of string beans, half cup of sugar beets and two slices of meat of your choice. That’s for the first day.” (Note: For the second and third days, please check out Mary Prieto’s column in past issues of The STAR.)

What vitamins and/or minerals do you take?

“Poten-Cee. It’s made of 100 percent pure Vitamin C which, according to research, when taken regularly serves as a strong defense against most ailments, including cancer (Which Rudy is now battling, cancer of the liver. — RFL). It helps strengthen the immune system against simple degenerative diseases that can build over time.”

And what workout do you do?

“These days, I hardly have time to work out. Since Rudy got sick, I devote my free time to taking care of him instead of going to the gym. I can do brisk walking around our house but, again, kapag nakahiga si Rudy I’d rather lie down in bed with him. Or while he’s in bed, I do shadow-boxing with my sons while he watches.”

What part of your body is your favorite?

“My buttocks. Ang daming nagsasabi, ‘Ang laki talaga ng puwet mo, ‘no!’ Gusto ko tuloy bawasan.”

What part naman do you think needs improvement?

“Now? All parts! I really need to work out more. I should trim down to 115 lbs.”

What part of your body is most vulnerable?

“My back.”

Are you taking any medication for that?

“No. I have double scoliosis, so medyo balanced ang body ko. I developed cervical vertigo because of my scoliosis which runs in our clan.” (Note: Among her relatives who are scoliotic are Zsa Zsa Padilla and Amy Perez.)

First part of a man’s body that you look at first.

“Let me see...Naku, I don’t think I still look at other men. Kapos silang lahat. Rudy has everything that I want in a man  — nice teeth, beautiful eyes, lahat sa kanya maganda.”

Is Rudy under a strict diet?

“No. He can eat anything, even now that he’s going through chemo sessions. But during his chemo-free months, he watches his diet because when he eats the ‘wrong’ food, his SGOT and his SGPT go up.”

How much liquid do you take per day?

“Medyo kulang. I should but I don’t take more than eight glasses of water every day.”

Soda?

“Di ako mahilig.”

Coffee?

“One cup a day. I take more of lemon-grass tea (tanglad).”

Juice(s)?

“Not much, although I’ve been taking a certain kind of ‘green’ mixed juice which Rudy is taking, sinasabayan ko siya every morning — a mixture of all five ‘greens’: Green apple, green bell pepper, cellery, bitter melon (ampalaya) and cucumber (pipino).” (Note: It’s the same “formula” passed on to Funfare by Philip Lo, prersident of the Coast Pacific Manufacturing Corporation based in Cebu City, when I bumped into him on a PAL flight from Cebu to Manila a few months ago.)

How much sleep do you get per night?

“I see to it that I get at least eight hours. Less than that, I feel sluggish.”

How do you make up for lack of sleep?

“I take power naps.”

Wasn’t there a time when you suffered migraine-like headaches?

“Yes, vascular headaches due to stress, fatigue, pagod. At that time kasi, I was taping through the night.”

What’s the last thing that you do before you go to sleep?

“I pray. And say ‘Good night!’ to Rudy. Rudy also prays; he reads a book of healing every night.”

And the first thing that you do when  you wake up?

“I pray pa rin.”

Favorite sleep wear?

“Pajamas and T-shirt, kasi ginawin ako, eh. Our air-con is always on full-blast because Rudy wants it that way.”

Are you a pillow person?

“Not me; Rudy is. I sleep with only two pillows; Rudy with four, including a bean bag. We sleep on a hard, flat bed because of my bad back (scoliosis). Since we sleep beside each other, Rudy has no choice but to sleep on the same hard bed.”

How do you cope with stress?

“Quiet prayer and reading (inspirational) books. I also get a two-hour massage at home once or twice a week.”

How else do you pamper yourself?

“I go to Vicki Belo’s clinic.”

Favorite hideaway?

“Tagaytay.”

Favorite city?

“Nag-enjoy kami sa Guam, nag-enjoy kami sa Hawaii. These two cities seem to be so near and you feel as if you’re just in Cebu. Yes, also Cebu. I always stay at Shangri-La when I’m in Cebu.”

Are you vain like most good-looking women?

“It’s part of our profession to be vain, but not naman excessive.”

How long does it take you to fix yourself?

“Only a few minutes. I take a little time only in fixing my hair. Makapal kasi ang buhok ko, eh, so I really have to blow dry it. Otherwise, if I’m in a hurry, I just tie it up.”

Are you afraid of the sun like most women?

“No. I love the sun. I look dark because I spent most of the time under the sun when Rudy and I, together with Rap-Rap and Renz, were in Guam for a vacation.”

How do you take care of your flawless skin?

“I wash myself with water and Belo Essentials soap. I moisturize.”

Name three guys (aside from Rudy) you think have nice bodies.

“Brad Pitt. Brad Pitt. Brad Pitt.”

And three women...

“Sharon Stone. Jodie Foster. Demi Moore.”
