Globe reinforces green initiatives

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Globe Telecom reinforced its commitment to environmental sustainability by supporting  twin activities that promote green initiatives and outdoor activities. During the said events, the telco firm sought donations of pre-owned mobile handsets.

The recent 37th Banff Mountain Film Festival and the National Climate Change Consciousness Week held at SMX Convention Center served as an avenue for Globe to call for donations that would benefit Super Typhoon Yolanda survivors who started arriving in Villamor Airbase last Nov. 21.

“Through those two meaningful events we hope that we were able to raise awareness on the importance of environmental sustainability. We took that opportunity to invite our kababayans to take part in helping Typhoon Yolanda survivors communicate with their loved ones by donating their old usable phones in designated bins within these areas,” said Fernando Esguerra, OIC, Globe Corporate Social Responsibility.

Under Globe Telecom’s Bangon Pinoy, mobile recycling bins were made available to raise awareness on the importance of recycling electronic wastes and to encourage the public to extend help to Yolanda victims by donating their old usable mobile phones.

Guests and other donating parties were encouraged to bring their old usable mobile phones and drop them in designated recycling bins.

Globe  donated P100 for every usable mobile phone (phone with battery) donated to the victims of Yolanda.

The 37th Banff Mountain Film Festival is a collection of short films taken from across the globe which features different outdoor sports and showcases inspirational stories on human endurance and triumph in the face of challenges and adversities.

Meanwhile, National Climate Change Consciousness Week is a week-long celebration that showcase climate change initiatives of the national and local government as well as to engage the media, youth and business sector.

Globe has been supporting environmental events to help promote the value of protecting and  conserving the country’s natural resources for future generations.

It  supported the 34th Mountaineering Federation of the Philippines, Inc. (MFPI) Mountaineering Congress in 2012 which  promoted responsible mountaineering and  established tourism livelihood for the Aeta community.

Bangon Pinoy is an enterprise-wide disaster response initiative that aims to have a unified system for donations, relief efforts, and corporate social responsibility programs across products and services.

It is an integrated program that allows communities devastated by calamities to benefit from various efforts geared towards rebuilding and rehabilitation.

It was first introduced by Globe in 2009 after Typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng wreaked havoc in the country.
