IT veteran takes over Xurpas

Iris Gonzales - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — Tech entrepreneur Nico Jose Nolledo has stepped down as chairman of Xurpas Inc. after establishing the company in 2001.  His resignation will take effect today, June 6.

Nolledo is stepping down to allow 40-year IT veteran Joey Gurango to take over as chairman and CEO of the listed technology company.

“The challenges and opportunities facing Xurpas are very different today than even just a few years ago so we are very excited that Joey is coming on board to steer the company through this next, exciting phase,” Nolledo said.

Xurpas is increasingly a B2B company and Gurango is the right candidate to take things forward, he said.

Gurango, for his part, said that with new technologies such as web3, and the urgency for all companies to digitally transform their business, there’s huge unmet demand for the kind of services the company provides both locally and internationally.

“I’m excited to lead Xurpas and unlock all these opportunities that are ripe for the taking,” Gurango said.

Gurango has a track record in the tech industry, having worked at both startups and blue chip software companies in the Philippines and overseas, the company said.

Xurpas’ board elected Gurango as its new chairman during its meeting last June 3.

His career started at Apple and Microsoft in the United States in the 1980s, during the home computer boom.

Starting as a software developer at Microsoft, he eventually served as Asia-Pacific director of products and services for Microsoft Business Solutions in the early 2000s.

He is a successful entrepreneur, having founded Match Data Systems (MDS) in Seattle, USA in 1987, MDS Philippines in 1991, MDS Australia in 1996, and Gurango Software in 2003.

Both MDS and Gurango Software were acquired by Great Plains Software and Kation Technologies, respectively.

Gurango studied industrial engineering at the University of the Philippines in Diliman, Quezon City. He later on studied electrical engineering at the University of Washington in Seattle.

Nolledo, on the other hand, will remain an advisor to the Xurpas board. Early this year, he infused P100 million into the company, which has been struggling to rebuild its revenue base in recent years.

Xurpas is a technology company in the Philippines. It was originally founded as a content provider to telecommunications operators.

The company has now expanded its offerings to include mobile applications, enterprise software solutions and platforms, IT staff augmentation, and blockchain technology.
