MANILA, Philippines — Ride-sharing company Grab Philippines on Tuesday said it has seen a surge in demand for rides in response to the suspension of rival Uber.

“In light of the recent order of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB), we find ourselves in a unique situation. We ask the patrons of ride-sharing to bear with us as there has naturally been an increase in bookings made on the Grab platform,” Grab said in a statement.

“Grab is committed to serve the riding public throughout this challenging period,” it added.

The ride-sharing company said it has already made necessary adjustments to ensure smoother operations and to make the situation less difficult for passengers.

“Our fare matrix has been adjusted to be capped at 1.4x and the threshold for surge to take effect has been regulated to control fares,” the company said, referring to how fares rise when demand for rides is higher.

Grab also thanked its operators for their efforts to meet the higher demand.

It also asked them to continue to serve their passengers.

On Monday, the LTFRB ordered the suspension of Uber's accreditation for a month. The board also directed the suspension of its online booking application for the same period.

Uber temporarily suspended its service on Tuesday morning to comply with LTFRB’s directive but it also resumed its operation after filing a motion for reconsideration before the board.

Despite the motion filed, LTFRB said Uber drivers who operate despite the suspension order will be apprehended and sanctioned.

The Palace, earlier Tuesday said that while it acknowledges the convenience that Uber provides, it also "understands the situation and therefore, will support LTFRB."

“The issue here is striking a balance between innovation and laws and regulations that Land Transportation and Franchising Board has to implement as part of its administrative function in regulating common carriers,” Presidential Spokesman Ernesto Abella said.
