Fujitsus RP unit to invest P2.88-B in new project

The local unit of Japans Fujitsu Ltd. is investing an additional P2.882 billion in a new project to make high-capacity hard disk drives for mainframe computers.
According to Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) Director-General Lilia B. de Lima, Fujitsu Computer Products Corp. of the Philippines will start making media-level servo track writing drives at its existing plant at the Carmelray Industrial Park in Laguna.
The new manufacturing line, with the potential to generate annual export sales of $820 million, will start operating in February and employ about 2,000 workers.
Fujitsu, Japans fifth largest chipmaker, began manufacturing operations in the Philippines in 1995 with a P2 billion investment in the production of magneto optical disk drives, magnetic hard disk drives and computer parts and accessories.
It poured in an additional P5.6 billion in 1998 to expand its manufacturing lines.
Fujitsu Computer Products Corp. is ISO 14001 certified and has already established a comprehensive system for the treatment and disposal of wastes.
It complies with the standards, rules and regulations of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Environmental Management Bureau, Laguna Lake Development Authority and other environmental protection agencies or entities.
