Essential red

B HIVE - B HIVE By Bianca Salonga -
Colors imply many things – emotions, character, objects and, yes, even one’s thoughts. More often than not, we find ourselves associating with certain shades. Notice how, every once in a while, you come across individuals who refuse to wear anything besides black. Then there are those who simply adore immaculate whites. Never mind if they have to practically stay still all day long for as long as they are guaranteed to look pristine. Pastels, of course, are often coupled with those who are younger and more adventurous. Of late, it has become rather easy to think of pink as the color of Paris Hilton. Whether that’s a good thing or not is really relative.

This season celebrates rich and lush jewel tones. Red, more specifically, has become a favorite, if not an essential. International label Louis Vuitton gave animal prints new appeal through fierce flashes of ruby. Christian Louboutin gets into mod fashion via red polka dot pumps. As tartans make a comeback for Fall/Winter 2006, it is inevitable to see an invasion of red checks. Interestingly, Anna Sui’s exceptional collection sparingly utilized red to create a look that celebrates the stylish magpie. Similarly, the Equestrian-inspired jackets have also integrated the shade to complement stark blacks, deep blues. As Lavin returns to the minimalist smart silhouettes of the season, lush fabrics like satin, silk and organza are tied in blinding cherry to create that requisite red dress. And with oversized bags winning every woman’s heart, we witness how patent leather, croc skin and classic calf skins are treated, resulting in pieces that are striking and simply irresistible.

Scarlet shades that vary from candy-colored to bleak give a whole new look to your wardrobe essentials, making them the ultimate accessories that are sure to leave an impression. We pick out four essentials that have turned, in a word, red.
The Top
A lustrous, pleated A-line top in red can instantly spruce up any look. Walk the city streets with the same kind of confidence that the color evokes and you’re ready to conquer the night.

The Shoe
Owning a pair of red shoes has become a fashion pre-requisite. Pumps, stilettos or ballet-inspired flats, there is always a perfect pair that will fit right into your personality and lifestyle.

The Jacket
Give the classic Houndstooth prints contemporary appeal with a daring splash of crimson. Inspired by the ’50s, this piece marries classic aesthetic with modern sensibilities. Neither over-the-top nor commonplace, it’s always a good idea to have a jacket in a shade that is anything but neutral.

The Bag
Think red Birkins bags and how they have become a status symbol of sorts. Blame it on the waiting list and price tag. In any case, one need not pay an arm and a leg to own a trusty tote in red. A functional red carry-all will fit right into just about any ensemble and occasion. Now, this is, quite literally, what one can call arm candy.
